Many years ago, when the author was young and foolish, he would fantasize about winning a large lottery jackpot. And, he would dream about helping others financially, improving the state of his community, and showering his family and friends with gifts and luxury. It was dreamt that if only he could miraculously see the "winning" numbers on automotive license plates, then he would be "richer" than he could ever imagine. It was a somewhat of a childish and child-like vision. But, what would one do with such a fortune. A few hundred million dollars after taxes can be spent quickly in the hands of a fool.
[Pro 21:20 KJV] 20 [There is] treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.
In other words, a fool and his money is soon parted. For one, it has been claimed that the former National Basketball Association star, Shaquille O' Neal, has a hundred million dollar yacht. What would the winner of a billion dollar lottery do after he paid his taxes? Buy a yacht for each day of the week?
So, it was realized during a decade long period of chaste celibacy that the most priceless treasure in this world is having a "close" relationship with the Lord. A life of regular daily scripture reading, continual prayer, plus consistent praise and worship is a treasure untold. Although, it just was.
So, over the past decade, when the author sees a Biblical verse on a license plate, he will look it up. A week ago, he saw "Samuel 1". He read this passage once again. And, a new insight sprung up.
Hannah a barren woman, whose husband, Elkanah, loved her dearly and gave her a worthy portion of respect, was simply unhappy. She wanted a child. She dreamt of a son.
So she might experience a mother's joy, she promised the Lord that. if she could bear one, he would serve Him for his entire life. In other words, she would give the Lord her son after He was weaned.
The author has read this passage numerous times. And, in that he is male, it never dawned upon him that Hannah must endure morning sickness, swollen feet, acne, food cravings, a swollen belly with a kicking child, and all the burdens of carrying a maturing fetus for nine months, simply so she might have this simple pleasure. This does not include the climatic pains of childbirth.
She prayed for all of that discomfort so she could enjoy a few moments of joy. Then, once she hand her blessing in hand, she must hand it over. The Lord had been promised it.
And, faithfully, when Elkanah and her son was weaned, she gave the Lord Samuel. This is faithfulness.
Like many of the fools in this world, have you ever prayed for the bounty of the lottery? Did you promise that you would bless churched with it, if you got it? Well, if you did win a billion dollar lottery, would you let it go? Could you hand the Lord the entire sum without taking a penny? Hannah did!
